How many light strands can you connect?

How the Christmas tree calculator works

Quick answer: plan on about 100 lights per foot of tree height for a classic look — 750 for a 7.5 ft tree — 150 per foot for a bright tree and 200 for a dazzling one. Type your tree's height and shape and the calculator gives the lights and strands, ornaments, garland and tree skirt size, plus the tallest tree your ceiling takes and how many strands you can safely connect.

The numbers are rules of thumb from tree retailers and decorators, shown so you can judge them. Balsam Hill suggests 100 lights per foot (100–150 depending on brightness, and double for a dramatic look); ornament guides range from 10 to 20 per foot; garland runs about 9 feet per foot of height; a tree skirt should be at least 6 inches wider than the tree; and Wayfair suggests leaving 6–12 inches between the treetop and the ceiling for the topper. Slim and pencil trees are narrower, so they need proportionally fewer lights, ornaments and garland: the calculator scales by width, and you can type your tree's exact width.

Connecting strands depends on the label, not the tree. Most light sets print a maximum connected wattage, often 210 W. Classic incandescent mini lights draw about 40 W per 100 bulbs, so about five strands end to end is the usual limit; LED strands draw about a tenth of that, so many more can share one plug. A 15-amp household circuit should carry no more than about 1,440 W for a continuous load. Everything is worked out in your browser.

How many Christmas lights for your tree

For a full tree, multiply the height in feet by 100 for a classic look, 150 for a bright one or 200 for a dazzling one, the range tree retailers give. Slim trees take about three quarters of these numbers and pencil trees about half. Pre-lit trees already carry their own lights.

Ornaments and garland by tree height

Decorating guides put ornaments at 10 to 20 per foot of height and garland at about 9 feet per foot, a little more if you like deep swags. Buy a few extra feet of garland: it disappears quickly into the branches.

Christmas tree skirt size chart

Pick a skirt at least 6 inches wider than the tree's widest branches. Full trees are about 0.6 times as wide as they are tall, slim trees about 0.43 and pencil trees about 0.3, which gives these common skirt sizes:

What size Christmas tree fits your ceiling?

Leave 6 to 12 inches between the treetop and the ceiling for the topper, and check whether the tree's listed height includes its stand.

Connecting light strands safely

  1. Find the tag near the plug: it prints the maximum wattage you can connect end to end, often 210 W.
  2. Divide it by the watts of one strand (also on the tag or the box). Classic incandescent mini strands use about 40 W per 100 bulbs, so five fit under 210 W; LED strands use about 5 W per 100, so dozens fit.
  3. When you need more strands than one run allows, start a new run from another outlet or a separate extension cord.
  4. Add up the whole display: a 15-amp, 120-volt household circuit should carry no more than about 1,440 W for hours at a time (80% of 1,800 W).
  5. Outdoors, use lights and extension cords rated for outdoor use.

FAQ

How many lights do I need for a 7.5 foot Christmas tree?

About 750 for a classic look (100 per foot of height), 1,150 for a bright tree and 1,500 for a dazzling one. A slim 7.5 ft tree needs roughly three quarters of that and a pencil tree about half. With strands of 100, that is 8 strands plus a spare for a classic full tree.

How many strands of Christmas lights can you connect?

Check the tag near the plug: it prints the maximum connected wattage, often 210 W. Incandescent mini strands use about 40 W per 100 bulbs, so the limit is usually five end to end (some packages say three). LED strands use about 5 W per 100 bulbs, so many more can be connected, again up to the number on the tag. Spread big displays across circuits: a 15-amp circuit should carry about 1,440 W continuously.

What size Christmas tree fits an 8-foot ceiling?

A 7 ft tree leaves a comfortable foot for the topper, and a 7.5 ft tree is the tallest that fits, with about 6 inches to spare. If the tree's listed height doesn't include the stand, subtract the stand's height too.

What size tree skirt do I need?

At least 6 inches wider than your tree. A full 7.5 ft tree is about 54 inches wide, so it takes a 60-inch skirt; a slim 7.5 ft tree takes about 48 inches and a pencil tree about 36. If you know your tree's width, type it in for an exact size.

How many ornaments for a 7.5 foot tree?

Between about 75 and 150: 10 to 20 per foot of height, depending on how full you like it and how big the ornaments are. The calculator's Classic setting uses 15 per foot, about 115 for a full 7.5 ft tree.
