What keyword density actually tells you — and what it does not

Keyword density is the percentage of times a word or phrase appears in a text relative to the total word count. If a 500-word article mentions "project management" 10 times, the density for that phrase is 2%. This tool counts every word and phrase in your text, sorts by frequency, and shows the density percentage — giving you a quick picture of what your content is actually about, as search engines see it.

The tool supports three analysis modes: single words (unigrams), two-word phrases (bigrams), and three-word phrases (trigrams). N-gram analysis is more useful than single-word counts because search queries are phrases, not isolated words. Seeing that "email marketing" appears 8 times is more actionable than knowing "email" appears 12 times and "marketing" appears 15 times separately.

Stop words — common function words like "the", "is", "and", "of" — are filtered out by default because they dominate frequency counts without telling you anything about your topic. The filter covers English and Spanish stop words. You can turn it off if you need the raw counts. The "show top" control lets you focus on the top 10, 20, or 50 results instead of scrolling through every word.

A common SEO myth is that there is an ideal keyword density (usually quoted as 1–3%). There is not. Google has explicitly said they do not use a density threshold. What matters is that your content naturally covers the topic with the right vocabulary. This tool is for auditing — checking that you have not accidentally over-repeated a phrase or missed a topic entirely — not for hitting a magic number.

FAQ

What is a good keyword density?

There is no magic number. Google does not use a density threshold. If a phrase appears naturally 3–5 times in a 1,000-word article, that is usually sufficient. If it appears 50 times, it looks spammy. Use this tool to audit, not to optimize toward a target percentage.

What are stop words?

Stop words are common function words (the, is, and, of, a, to) that appear frequently in every text regardless of topic. Filtering them out lets you see the topic-relevant words that actually matter.
