How Ecuador’s 13th salary works

Quick answer: Ecuador’s 13th salary (décimo tercer sueldo, or bono navideño) is one twelfth of everything you earned from December 1, 2025 to November 30, 2026 (Labor Code art. 111). A fixed $600 salary for the whole period gives $600; starting June 1 at $500 gives $500 × 180 ÷ 360 = $250. Paid as a lump sum, it is due by Thursday, December 24, 2026, nationwide — the Sierra and Costa dates apply only to the 14th salary.

Since 2015 the default is monthly payment: one twelfth is added to each paycheck and nothing more comes in December, unless you asked in writing, in the first 15 days of January, to receive it as a lump sum. The base is gross pay under art. 95 — salary, overtime, commissions and regular bonuses, not profit sharing, the reserve fund or the 14th salary. No IESS contribution or income tax is withheld. If you leave, the prorated amount goes into your final settlement (finiquito). Everything runs in your browser — your salary is never sent anywhere.

FAQ

When is the 2026 13th salary paid?

Private employers must pay the lump sum by Thursday, December 24, 2026, and the date is the same nationwide (Labor Code art. 111); regional dates apply only to the 14th salary. If you are paid monthly, you already received it with each paycheck. For the central-government public sector, the government announced payment on November 16, 2026.

How is a prorated 13th salary calculated?

Add up what you earned from December 1 (or your start date) to November 30, or to your last day, and divide by 12. With a fixed salary that equals salary × days ÷ 360, with 30-day months: starting June 15 at $500 gives 166 days and $230.56.

I’m paid monthly — do I get anything in December?

No. With monthly payment (mensualizado) one twelfth comes with each paycheck and there is no extra payment in December; the yearly total is the same. To get a lump sum instead, ask your employer in writing in the first 15 days of January.
